THE TOWNLAND OF BALLYMORAN

The townland of Ballymoran is in the parish of Lisnadill in Armagh County. It is labelled number 9 on the map. H886415

The 1826 Schools Commission report describes the school in the townland:

"Ballymarran - A pay school under the care of Matthew Donaldson, of the Church of Ireland denomination, who was in receipt of 4l per annum. The school was held in a cabin built at a cost of 5l. The school provided education for 24 scholars."

The Environment and Heritage Service Sites and Monuments Record (2002) notes the following in this townland:

The N, E & S sides of this roughly circular earthwork are preserved by field boundaries. The townland boundary also curves round the perimeter on S. The W side has been levelled & now only a very slight scarp can be seen Elsewhere a low enclosing bank, 2.5m wide & 0.3m high has survived, becoming more substantial on the S - 4m wide & 0.6m high. A ditch 3.5m wide & c.1 m deep can also be seen around the perimeter, but it has been recut. The diam of the enclosure is 36m N-S. See SM7 file for further details.

A circular "Fort" c.35m in diameter is marked on the 1835 OS 6" map. It was located on the N end of a low drumlin overlooking a small valley. All that now survives is a very faint rise in a field of improved pasture.

Sitename: KIRKHILL, CLONCONCHY Townland: BALLYMORAN
CONDITION: traces only
The SW field boundary beyond the area marked on the 1835 6"map may be part of a larger enclosure. It consists of a silted outer ditch & an over grown bank. The level of "Kirk field" is markedly higher than the field to W leaving a scarp face 0.85m high. The bank is 2m wide & 0.4m high, and the ditch is 2.4m wide & 0.5m deep. The site is only marked on the 1835 map, not on any later additions. There are No visible remains within the enclosure. See SM7 file for further details.
