The townland was described in 1838 in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs:
"Bally Newry school, townland of Bally Newry; income: a small salary from the London Hibernian Society, voluntary contribution from pupils; expenditure: none; physical instruction: none; intellectual and moral instruction: Bible only used; number of pupils: males, 45 under 10 years of age, 14 from 10 to 15, a total of 59; females, 37 under 10 years of age,16 from 10 to 15, a total of 53; total number of pupils 112, 49 Established Church, 44 Presbyterians, 16 Roman Catholics, 3 other denominations; master James McClelland, Wesleyan Methodist, visited July 1837." (Ordnance Survey Memoirs 1835-38)
The 1826 Schools Commission report describes the school in the townland:
"Ballynewry - A pay school under the care of Ogle Farrel, of the Church of Ireland denomination, who was in receipt of 20l per annum. The school was conducted in a cottage, built by the neighbours at a cost of 15l. The school operated under the direction of the local rector and educated 55 scholars."
