THE TOWNLAND OF BROUGHAN

The townland of Broughan is in the parish of Lisnadill in Armagh County. It is labelled number 13 on the map.

A landscaping feature planted with conifers situated on a NW facing slope The interior slopes from E-W. The site is enclosed by a circular bank which is sharply defined and has a gap at SE which looks modern. The external ditch varies in width and is widest at NE.

This is a landscaping feature, a single bank and ditched enclosure, 125ft in diameter.

A small circular "Fort" no more than 30m in diam. is marked on the OS 6" map of 1835. It was positioned S of the summit of a prominent drumlin ridge, but no visible trace survives. The lower stone of a rotary quern was found at the roadside nearby.

A circular platform 27m E-W lies within a small overgrown field enclosure adjacent to a deserted house. The W, N & E sides are defined by a steep scarp & external ditch preserved by the modern field boundary. On the W the scarp falls c.1.7m to the base of the ditch, but elsewhere is not so pronounced. The ditch also varies, but is generally c.3.5m wide & upto 0.5m deep below the outer ground level. On the E side it is waterlogged. The S side of the monument has been completely levelled.
