THE TOWNLAND OF CASHEL

The townland of Cashel is in the parish of Lisnadill in Armagh County. It is labelled number 14 on the map.

The Environment and Heritage Service Sites and Monuments Record (2002) notes the following in this townland:

The wall of the cashel has been greatly reduced within living memory both in height & width and the site has been used as a burial ground for stillborn children - hence the name "Relig". There were originally four entrances, all of which are now closed but on the S & W sides they are still visible. According to Paterson, there is a souterrain on the site. There is also a fallen "Pillar Stone" on the NE site c.5m long x 1.7m wide which marks the entrance to the souterrain. See SM7 file for further details.

CONDITION: traces only
A large, circular "Fort" is shown on the 1835 OS 6" map. The monument occupied the crest of a drumlin ridge with the ground falling away to the E & W. Scarcely any trace remains but the outline is just discernible as a change in vegetation. It seems to measure c.42m in diam. from N-S & this corresponds quite closely with the notation on the early 6" map.

Paterson recorded a souterrain 2 fields N of the cashel on Cashel Hill. It lay on a N-facing slope close to a field fence, but there are no visible remains.
