THE TOWNLAND OF CREEVE

The townland of Creeve is in the parish of Loughgilly in Armagh County. It is labelled number 15 on the map.

The Environment and Heritage Service Sites and Monuments Record (2002) notes the following in this townland:

CONDITION: substantial remains
At the N end of Lough Gilly is a domed mound rising in the centre to a height of 2m above water level. It is roughly circular, c.24m across SW-NE. Dense vegetation covers the site, even the perimeter, obscuring any struct- ural details. Thus it is not possible to confirm whether the feature is artificial crannog or simple a natural mound. Access to the site in dry weather is possible along an overgrown isthmus to NE. On the 1835 OS 6" map it is shown as "Island" c.40m from the N shore of the lough.

The site was identified on aerial photographs, but a field visit showed that this was not an antiquity, but a steep scarp within the hill.
