THE TOWNLAND OF DERRYNAUGHT
The townland of Derrynaught is in the parish of Kildarton in Armagh County.
It is labelled number 3 on the map.
Paterson (Armachiana, Vol. 16, p.212 ) notes:
Derrynaught. "The oakwood of the hill-breast". Derry (Doire) is one of the most
prolific roots in Irish place-names giving name to about 60 townlands and entering
as a prefix into the names of over 500 others, an indication of the former abundance
of such trees. It occurs in County Armagh as a place-name and in various combinations.
The situation of the townland on the breast (uchta) of rising ground is indicative
of the origin of the termination.
The Environment and Heritage Service Sites and Monuments Record (2002) notes the following in this townland:
Rath of the Early Christian Period.
SMR NO: ARM 013:017
Grid Ref: H93314413
Townland: DERRYNAUGHT
Sitename: DERRYNAUGHT FORT
Condition: some remains
The site comprises a roughly circular platform, 36.5m E-W x 37.5m N-S, c.0.5m above the surrounding ground at W & S, but almost 1m high at E. A perimeter bank, 3m wide and 0.6m high in places can be seen at N & E. On the E side there appears to be a break in the bank, 4m wide, which may reflect an original entrance. Outside the bank is a slight ditch, 2.1m wide & 0.8m deep, but this is essentially a recent feature. On the N side, the top of the bank stands almost 2m above the base of the ditch.
