THE TOWNLAND OF DRUMMILT

The townland of Drummilt is in the parish of Loughgilly in Armagh County. It is labelled number 23 on the map.

Paterson (Armachiana, Vol. 16, p.21) notes:

Drum (Druim) [meaning 'ridge'] is one of the most common names and figures as a prefix to about 2,400 places besides an equal number in which it is combined.

The Environment and Heritage Service Sites and Monuments Record (2002) notes the following in this townland:

"The 1835 OS 6" map shows an irregular oval "Fort" positioned on a slight natural promontory above a small stream which also formed the townland boundary. The 1863 revision illustrates a circular "Fort" c.45m in diam. The area is now occupied by a house and garden, and although part of the perimeter of the monument may be reflected in the garden hedge, little original seems to have survived. It is not now possible to determine which of the earlier plans is correct. "

At the N end of Lough Gilly is a domed mound rising in the centre to a height of 2m above water level. It is roughly circular, c.24m across SW-NE. Dense vegetation covers the site, even the perimeter, obscuring any struct- ural details. Thus it is not possible to confirm whether the feature is artificial crannog or simple a natural mound. Access to the site in dry weather is possible along an overgrown isthmus to NE. On the 1835 OS 6" map it is shown as "Island" c.40m from the N shore of the lough.

The field where this monument was located has been harrowed and planted with crop. The area of the site could be observed fro Loughgilly Church as a higher coloured stoney area with some dark patches.
